Time for Digital Sovereignty

Why the North is making the difference — and why Duocast believes in it

The call for digital sovereignty is growing louder. Geopolitical tensions and the dominance of large foreign technology companies have made clear how vulnerable our digital infrastructure has become. Who controls our data? Where is it stored? And who decides what happens when something goes wrong? These questions are no longer theoretical — they directly affect our economy, security, and ability to innovate. That’s why it’s so relevant that Samenwerking Noord is placing this topic at the centre of its event “Time for Digital Sovereignty”, held at the historic Niemeyer Factory in Groningen.

A northern ecosystem of autonomy

While much of Europe is still discussing strategy, the North of the Netherlands is putting it into practice. The region is developing an ecosystem where public and private partners collaborate on digital independence. Initiatives such as Cloud of the North, Duocast Connect+, the AI Fabriek, and many other northern organisations strengthen each other at the intersection of data, infrastructure, and innovation. Together, they are creating infrastructure where data can flow safely, locally, and sustainably — under European legislation and with full visibility across the entire chain. From fibre to cloud, from software to knowledge development.

Why this matters to Duocast

For Duocast, digital sovereignty isn’t a trend — it’s a principle. Every organisation that operates digitally deserves infrastructure that is reliable, transparent, and under its own control. That’s why we consciously choose European technology (Nokia), data storage within the Netherlands, and management by our own teams. Our vision is simple: those who understand and manage their infrastructure retain control over their digital future. Digital autonomy goes beyond technology alone. It means being able to trust in the continuity of your connections — knowing there’s a redundant route, that latency remains predictable, and that you are not dependent on suppliers outside European jurisdiction. That is the essence of Duocast Connect+: continuity without compromise.

Stronger together

The event by Samenwerking Noord demonstrates a growing movement in the North, where governments, education, and businesses are joining forces. That collaboration is essential — digital sovereignty cannot be achieved in isolation. It requires shared infrastructure, shared knowledge, and a shared belief that independence starts with cooperation. At Duocast, we are proud to contribute to that collective effort.
